Some people are stuck on the question of health. How often do chronically ill people wonder, “Will I always live this difficult, frustrating life? Walking is a challenge; every part of my body hurts almost constantly.” They ponder the question of the meaning of their lives, “What is my purpose? How can I make a difference for good in this world?” I point you to the life of Carole who continues to thrive despite living with post-polio since her early thirties, having dystonia since childhood, and adding Sjogren’s a decade ago. And, I might add, living with a rare and perfect husband. Yes, that, and I’m very modest and humble.
Why Sunbreaks in Unending Storms?
Why write a book that is about the pain of an unending life that continues year after year most unpleasantly? Carole and I wrote the book because there are millions of people who live lives that, when examined closely, seem unimaginably difficult. We have written to help others like Carole. We want them to know the ways she has found to live the best life possible while experiencing increasing limitations. It tells about medical personnel and treatments and how the results impacted her life. This book tells of her experiences with friends and families as well as doctors, emotions felt, practical issues encountered, and spiritual helps and questions. It shows that Carole and I having each other enabled us both to thrive.
Another important reason we wrote is to help the sympathetic person understand the difficulties involved in living the life of the chronically ill. We want those who are caring about the invisibly disabled to consider and accept their realities.
If you are truly interested in knowing about the lives of the invisibly disabled—maybe a relative, friend, child, parent, or patient—this book is a must read. I caution the faint-hearted reader: be genuinely concerned. Only the serious enquirer might have the fortitude to complete the quest.
