First, father means one who begins something that no one else can claim as theirs. Paul, the apostle of Jesus Christ, described this process quite well when he wrote, “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6) The good work God fathered in Christians is spiritual birth which equips us for and with eternal life. Our Heavenly Father seals us with the Holy Spirit. He guarantees He will complete us spiritually. And if we truly are children of God, we will live as children of God since He equips us with His perfect spiritual provision. His Fatherly care is loving, gentle, and firm; it is complete without limit.
God never allows us to stray out of His sight and provides every needed help for our Christian growth. The example of God as Father is one which reveals the perfect parental care. Fathers are to learn from God how to be more than biological causes in their children’s existence. God has revealed the ways of a Father pleasing to Himself in Jesus Christ, His Son.
A shepherd’s example
The Good Shepherd is a most clear-cut view of characteristics fathers should have. Shepherds who are good lead their flocks; they don’t push them. Because he is out in front, the shepherd sets the pace and chooses the best pathway. Good shepherds love all their sheep, so they do whatever is necessary to save even just one. Loving shepherds enjoy staying near their flock and are careful about being away from them for too long. Wise shepherds teach their flock to recognize and obey them; the sheep come when called. The protecting shepherd shields his flock from dangers of all sorts.
A strong shepherd gains obedience from his flock and insists they obey his direction. He leads in love, protects in strength, and guides in wisdom. Fathers who want to enjoy pleasing God will find they need to accept Christ as Savior, read the book of Christ—the Bible, pray to God in Jesus, and walk in the Holy Spirit’s wisdom.
Summing up
Fathers who do these things see God, through them, begin acting in their children. Such actions will be the start of joy in Christ for eternity. What greater achievement could a father be part of?
